I should probably write these thoughts right when the season is over but I completely forgot. These thoughts will probably be fairly brief and concise since I was only watching five shows that season.
- Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu: Sukeroku Futatabi-hen
- Demi-chan wa Kataritai
- Kobayashi-san Chi no Maidragon
- Gabriel DropOut
Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu: Sukeroku Futatabi-hen
It is fucking amazing. I don’t usually watch these kinds of anime but I thoroughly enjoyed this. The direction of the anime was impeccable. It feels like every moment in the anime was carefully thought out and has implications where as some anime will choose to include various scenes that have very low impact on anything and is just there to fill time. Without a doubt number one for me for Winter 2016/2017.
Demi-chan wa Kataritai
My ranking between Demi-chan and Maidragon is very close but Demi-chan edges out. The quality is more consistent with me and I very much enjoy the calm vibes it gives. All the characters are very likeable and doesn’t try to go out of its way to please the viewer. The growth of the characters is very charming to see and having great main character and cast boosted my ranking of this by a lot.
Kobayashi-san Chi no Maidragon
Started weak then it got better. Really really close between this and Demi-chan. Character designs and colours are very cute and vibrant. Lot’s of meaningless fanservice was a big turn off for me. I would’ve enjoyed it more if it focused more on the other characters because they became so dull and one dimensional and left a lot to be explored.
It was alright. Many people came into this hoping for a worthy successor of Amagami SS but it was disappointing. The ending to the first arc was god awful but atleast it seemed to improving with each episode. The few good things that came out of this was that a childhood friend didn’t have a shit arc and made me appreciate Amagami SS even more.
Basically the meme anime of the season if you will. Came in expecting some slice of life with some tomfoolery but it was extremely underwhelming after the first couple of times. The jokes exhausted fairly early in the series and it didn’t seem like the characters were progressing at all. There was some hope when they introduced more characters but in the end it just fell flat or had little to no impact at all. Ending was awful too.
I definitely recommned SGRS above all. If you like some cutesy slice of life with cute girls doing cute things then you can watch Demi-chan and Maidragon. If you want to watch Seiren you can watch Amagami SS before it and than Amagami SS+ because they’re both better than Seiren. If you want to kill time with some cheap comedy you can watch Gabriel DropOut.
